Where is the Grass Greener in Retirement?
Try These 10 Places.

For years now, I’ve been telling my Intelligence Report readers about something I call, my Big Idea. It is based on the human tidal wave of over 70 million Baby Boomers who, in 2008, will begin to retire and will head south to warm weather and low taxes.

Primarily my Big Idea serves to motivate investors to broaden their horizons. First up, maybe now is finally the time for you to put those thoughts of moving South into action. Let’s look at where to live in retirement or for a second home.

The following is a list of 10 premier destinations that you should consider, going into retirement. The list is in no special order:

(1) Naples, Florida, southwest Florida’s most glorious, glamorous, and expensive location. Stay west of Route 41 (the Tamiami Trail) and south of Seagate. Port Royal is exquisite and oh-so dear. I love The Moorings, Park Shore, and Aqualine Shores areas, and you can’t beat being in walking range of 3rd Street and 5th Avenue.

(2) Amelia Island Plantation/Fernandina Beach—on the Atlantic north of Jacksonville. Low risk for hurricanes and much cooler than southern Florida. Magnificent old live oaks proliferate.

(3) RiverTown—St. Joe is proposing to build this new community on the St. Johns River southwest of Jacksonville.

(4) St. Augustine—south of Jacksonville on the Atlantic, has an old Florida appeal and loads of beachfront.

(5) Sarasota—a Midwestern stronghold for the discerning, discrete low-keyed.

(6) Venice, Florida—low key and affordable south of Sarasota on the Gulf.

(7) Winter Park, Florida—if you don’t need to be on the water, this beautiful Orlando suburb is a must visit.

(8) Beaufort, S.C.—maybe where Debbie and I would live if we weren’t in Key West. Gracious old homes and franchise-lacking neat downtown. Coldwell Banker’s Harry Waddington is the realtor to see (1-843-986-2442).

(9) Asheville, N.C.—stay at the Biltmore Estate, and check out the area where many Key Westers relocate when their kids are of school age.

(10) Chapel Hill/Fearrington, N.C.—renowned for great medical facilities, education, and southern-style brick architecture.

Good luck discovering your ideal retirement location. With this list, it’s hard to know where to look first.
