I'm calling 2008 the year of green in greens! And I'm not just talking about alternative energy plays. While the financial and consumer cyclical bear markets continue, we'll keep our money in the parts of the world economy that continue to be in bull markets.
2008 will be another great year for the secular growth areas of the global economy, which all have one thing in common: They stem from the 1.5 billion new consumers in China and India, and the world's effort to marshal economic forces to bring energy, food, infrastructure, etc. to these consumers so they can move from poverty to capitalism without destroying the Earth with pollution. This is the story of the 21st century and the engine of growth and opportunity for the next 20 to 30 years.
One of the greatest growth waves we rode in '07 (and will continue to ride in '08) is green technology stocks.
Green Tech Wave
Here are the great growth stories in this wave:
- Solar power—silicon-based photovoltaics and non-silicon-based photovoltaic energy (thin-film technologies and solar concentrators)
- Wind power
- Biofuels—the size of this industry should quadruple in the next four years thanks to the new U.S. energy bill
- Solid-state lighting—the death of the incandescent light bulb is imminent, even in the United States where its fate was sealed with the new energy bill outlawing the use of incandescent bulbs by 2014
- Clean technology infrastructure—water and energy delivery
- Virtualization software—saves billions in energy costs by allowing one server to do the work of 10
- Negawatt investing—the cleanest energy is that which never has to be produced, so we're looking at energy transmission, regulating appliances and software
- Software as a Service (SaaS)—one of the great growth areas for '08 is software that allows an application to be hosted, supported and maintained by an application provider and accessed remotely by the customer
Chindia Middle Class Wave
There are many ground-floor opportunities in the soon-to-be largest consumer economy with entrepreneurial firms that would be comparable to investing in Home Depot (HD), Best Buy (BBY) or Wal-Mart (WMT) 20 years ago. (Get in on these opportunities today by clicking here.)
21st-Century Digital Lifestyle Wave
The developing world is skipping all of the old technologies from the 20th century and going right to the new stuff. Apple (AAPL) continues to reinvent the consumer technology space, and we're riding it and its key suppliers through '08.
We're also finding great opportunities in:
- Smartphones as the new PC
- GPS devices—set to really take off in '08-'09
Medical/Life Sciences Wave
The death of big pharma is continuing as its patents run out and must be replaced by new biotech drugs that have 15- to 20-year patent protections.
So, forget about the financial market—the Chinese could care less whether we have a mortgage crisis in the United States—and keep in mind that we'll see 75 to 100 IPOs in '08. Add it all together, and it's going to be a great year for real growth investors.
We had a ton of 100% to 200% gainers in 2007, which was great! And we have just as many opportunities in '08, especially in green investments. But, you've got to be onboard.
