Apple Stores Shed Employees: Multiple reports have surfaced that Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) is laying off considerable numbers of recently hired employees at its overseas Apple Stores, according to MacRumors. The layoffs are happening at stores in Britain and other non-U.S. locations. While U.S. and Canadian stores aren’t seeing layoffs, part-time employees in the U.S. say their hours have been cut back. That could change as the company gears up for the expected launch of the new iPhone and possibly a smaller iPad next month. Apple recently instituted salary and benefit increases for its Apple Store employees in the wake of criticism over low employee compensation and long hours, despite strong profits generated by the stores.

iPhone 5 Will Hit in Waves: Reports say Apple with unveil its next-generation iPhone on Sept. 12 and begin accepting pre-orders for the phone on that day, iMore notes. The new iPhones will start shipping nine days later on Sept. 21 for orders in the U.S. A second wave of shipping for international orders will commence during the first week of October. Last year, Apple debuted the iPhone 4S on Oct. 4, but didn’t begin accepting pre-orders until Oct. 7, followed by waves of phone shipments on Oct. 14 and Oct. 28.

Silicon Valley Burglar Apprehended: The home of the late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs was burglarized last month, the Silicon Valley Mercury News reports. The Santa Clara County District Attorney’s office says the crooks made off with $60,000 in “computers and personal items” from the residence. Police have arrested Kariem McFarlin on charges relating to the burglary and attempts to sell property taken from the home. Police sources said the crime appeared random and the Jobs residence was likely not specifically targeted. Bail for McFarlin has been set at $500,000. If convicted, he could receive more than seven years in prison. The burglary at the Jobs residence is the highest profile incident in a recent wave of burglaries in the Bay Area. Palo Alto has seen a 63% rise in burglaries, an increase that police say has been accelerated by the residents’ habit of leaving windows and doors unlocked.
