Gold Slips for Third Straight Session

Gold Silver GLD IAU SLVGold futures dipped Thursday to continue their weeklong slide, falling 0.66% at a final bid of $1,565.30 per ounce, according to CME Group data. Gold reached a high of $1,577.90 and a low of $1,554.40.

Silver futures finished the day up 0.52% with a final bid of $27.14. Thursday’s high for silver prices reached $27.20, and the low was $26.44.

Gold bullion ended at $1,575 per ounce for Thursday’s trading session in London, according to BullionVault.

“We are still confident that the current slide in the price of gold is nothing more than a temporary weakness,” Commerzbank’s head of commodity research, Eugen Weinberg, said in Frankfurt today. “The high levels of uncertainty resulting from the ongoing sovereign-debt crisis in the Eurozone clearly suggest a much higher gold price.”

Gold trusts experienced slight losses, while the iShares Silver Trust (NYSE:SLV) edged north Thursday.

  • The SPDR Gold Trust (NYSE:GLD) was down about 0.3%.
  • The iShares Gold Trust (NYSE:IAU) was about 0.3% lower.
  • The iShares Silver Trust climbed about 0.4%.

Gold and silver mining ETFs headed south Thursday.

  • The Market Vectors Gold Miners ETF (NYSE:GDX) slipped 0.6%.
  • The Market Vectors Junior Gold Miners ETF (NYSE:GDXJ) dropped nearly 2%.
  • The Global X Silver Miners ETF (NYSE:SIL) was about 0.6% lower.

Gold mining shares showed losses almost across the board Thursday, with NovaGold Resources (AMEX:NG) bucking the trend.

  • Agnico-Eagle Mines (NYSE:AEM) dropped about 2.2%.
  • Barrick Gold (NYSE:ABX) was down about 1.1%. 
  • Eldorado Gold (NYSE:EGO) showed losses of around 2.6%.
  • Goldcorp (NYSE:GG) was down 0.2%.
  • Kinross Gold (NYSE:KGC) was flat.
  • Newmont Mining (NYSE:NEM) dipped about 1.1%.
  • NovaGold Resources was up about 1.3%.
  • Yamana Gold (NYSE:AUY) was marginally up.

Most silver mining shares showed gains Thursday, with Silver Standard Resources (NASDAQ:SSRI) leading the way.

  • Coeur d’Alene Mines (NYSE:CDE) climbed about 0.9%.
  • Hecla Mining (NYSE:HL) jumped about 2.1%.
  • Pan American Silver (NASDAQ:PAAS) slightly slipped around 0.2%.
  • Silver Wheaton (NYSE:SLW) dipped around 0.5%.
  • Silver Standard Resources rose 3.3%.
