Mountain Lion Leaps to Solid Debut: With its Windows 8 operating system set to launch later this year, Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) may want to take note of this week’s release of Apple‘s (NASDAQ:AAPL) OS X Mountain Lion, which has been downloaded more than 2 million times in 48 hours, AllThingsD reports. The new operating system has already been installed on 3% of the 66 million Macs around the world, according to Web traffic. In just two days, Mountain Lion — available only by download from the Mac App Store — has generated an estimated $38 million in sales, analysts say.

Apple Developing Video-Enhanced Glasses: Patents have been awarded to Apple relating to heads-up displays similar to the video glasses recently shown off by Google (NASDAQ:GOOG), Patently Apple notes. Earlier this month, Apple was awarded a patent for a video telephonic headset. The company was granted a second patent this month covering a Retina-quality display that relies on a battery considerably smaller than the one that powers the iPhone. Apple’s work with video-enhanced glasses dates back to 2006, well before Google, which filed for its first HUD patent in 2011.

iPhone 4 Gets Price Cut: Big-box retailer Best Buy (NYSE:BBY) has slashed the price for the 8GB iPhone 4 model from $99 to $49.99 with a two-year contract, Apple Insider notes. The affected models are compatible with AT&T (NYSE:T), Sprint (NYSE:S) and Verizon (NYSE:VZ). Given that there is no time limit noted on the reduced price, it may be permanent. With the looming debut of the next-generation iPhone, expected in September or October, the price cut may be meant to clear out inventories of older phones.
