Louisiana State Representative, Jeff Thompson, a Republican from Bossier City, authored a new law that requires convicted sex offenders and child predators to list their criminal status on Facebook (NASDAQ:FB).

The law, which was signed by Governor Bobby Jindal earlier this month and will go into effect August 1, 2012, applies to all social media sites CNN reports.

According to the law, sex offenders and child predators will need to include a notice of the specific crime(s) committed, the jurisdiction of conviction(s), their current residential address and a description of their physical characteristics, on social networking websites like Facebook, LinkedIn (NYSE:LNKD) and Twitter.

Facebook wholly supports the law.

“Our Statement of Rights and Responsibilities already bars registered sex offenders from using Facebook,” the company told CNN. “We take the safety and security of our users, especially the many young people on Facebook, very seriously. We have consistently supported legislation to help strengthen law enforcement’s ability to find, prosecute and convict online sexual predators.”

Louisiana isn’t the only state with strict laws aimed at protecting children from sex offenders. Some states even prohibit the convicted criminals from even having their own social media pages.
