Amazon to Sell $600K Kindle Fire Screen Ads

Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) wants to sell ads that will run on its best-selling Kindle Fire tablet.

The Internet-retailer is soliciting potential advertisers to purchase ads that will appear on the tablet’s welcome page, which appears when a Kindle Fire user first activates or switches off the device, Ad Age reports.

Advertising packages that feature Kindle Fire ads start at $600,000 for two months. For $1 million, advertisers get additional space and tie-ins with Amazon’s other promotional activities.

Other Kindle models already display ads, usually as the user switches off the tablet. The company is expected to debut a new Kindle Fire model later this year.

While the approach is innovative, at least some advertising agencies approached by Amazon so far have balked at the deal. The price of the advertising package, coupled with concerns about the number of devices the ads would appear on is dampening enthusiasm for the program.

Agency executives are also worried that if ads start appearing in places consumers did not expect to see them, that could alienate potential customers.

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) currently offers advertising packages for ads that appear within apps on its smartphones and tablets. While pricing for such advertising started near $1 million, that has fallen to about $100,000, Ad Age said.
