Teens with wheels conjure up a slew of comical and scary images … mostly scary. While the right car cannot prevent all possible troublesome scenarios from happening — a safe, reliable vehicle can do wonders for a parent’s peace of mind.

VroomGirls, an automotive website geared toward women, compiled a list of the six best new cars for teen drivers. Selections were made based on the top three parental benchmarks: safety, reliability and value. Requirements of the typical image-conscious teen — fun to drive and cool-looking — also were considered.

The top six:

  1. Toyota Yaris: This Toyota (NYSE:TM) subcompact’s traits include good gas mileage, low price tag and simple controls.
  2. Volkswagen Golf: The Volkswagen (PINK:VLKAY) small family car’s top traits include fuel efficiency, easy-to-use stick-shift and sharp handling.
  3. Scion XB: Produced by Toyota under the Scion brand, this compact’s top traits include a spacious interior, easy maneuverability, and reliability.
  4. Kia Rio: Top traits include a USB-compatible stereo with steering-wheel controls and its 10-year, 100,000-mile extended warranty.
  5. Honda Fit: The Honda (NYSE:HMC) subcompact is spacious despite its size, and also is praised for its large windows and reliability.
  6. Chevrolet Sonic: The General Motors (NYSE:GM) Chevy-brand subcompact sports 10 airbags, a low price tag and a simple-yet-stylish design.
