10 Energy Giants to Uplug From Your Portfolio

You’d think that amid soaring crude oil prices, now above $100 a barrel, and rising gasoline prices that big oil and energy stocks would be doing well. Unfortunately for investors, it’s not as simple as that. Oil service stocks make their money on exploration for future oil production, and electric utilities and suppliers are seeing margins pinched.

I watch more than 5,000 publicly traded companies with my Portfolio Grader tool, ranking companies by a number of fundamental and quantitative measures. And this week, 10 energy giants to sell.

Here they are, in alphabetical order. Each one of these stocks gets a “D” or “F” according to my research, meaning it is a “sell” or “strong sell.”

Baker Hughes (NYSE:BHI) supplies oilfield services, products, technology and systems to the worldwide oil and natural gas industry. In the last year, BHI stock has dropped 42%, compared to a gain of 5% for the Dow Jones. Baker Hughes stock gets a “D” grade for earnings momentum, a “D” grade for its ability to exceed the consensus earnings estimates on Wall Street, an “F” grade for the magnitude in which earnings projections have increased over the past months and a “D” grade for cash flow. Devon Energy (NYSE:DVN) is involved with the exploration, development and production of oil, natural gas and natural gas liquids. Devon is down 24% since last April. DVN stock gets a “D” grade for operating margin growth, a “D” grade for the magnitude in which earnings projections have increased over the past months and a “D” grade for cash flow. ENI (NYSE:E) is involved with the generation, transmission and distribution of electric energy in Chile. In the last 12 months, E stock has slid 6%, compared to gains by the broader markets. E stock gets an “F” grade for sales growth, a “D” grade for operating margin growth, a “D” grade for earnings growth, a “D” grade for earnings momentum, a “D” grade for its ability to exceed the consensus earnings estimates on Wall Street and a “D” grade for cash flow. Hess  (NYSE:HES) explores for, develops, produces, purchases, transports and sells crude oil and natural gas. Hess has dropped 31% in the last year. Hess stock gets a “D” grade for operating margin growth, an “F” grade for earnings growth, an “F” grade for earnings momentum, an “F” grade for its ability to exceed the consensus earnings estimates on Wall Street, a “D” grade for the magnitude in which earnings projections have increased over the past months and an “F” grade for cash flow. Petrobras Petroleo Brasileiro (NYSE:PBR) is an integrated oil and gas company based in Brazil. PBR stock is down 36% since this time last year. PBR stock gets “D” grade for operating margin growth, a “D” grade for earnings growth, a “D” grade for earnings momentum, a “D” grade for the magnitude in which earnings projections have increased over the past months and an “F” grade for cash flow. Schlumberger (NYSE:SLB) provides a range of products and services to companies in the oil industry. Since this time last year, Schlumberger has lost 22%, compared to gains by the broader markets.
