Apple May Sell 1 Million New iPads on Opening Sales Day: According to the Los Angeles Times, sales analysts predict that the new iPad may move over 1 million units out the gate when retail opens this Friday. Last year, the iPad 2 took several days to break 1 million sales. However, projections for sales of the new iPad show it moving units at a rate exponential to that of its predecessor. Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) has already sold out online pre-orders, and voracious consumer appetite for its newest tablet bodes well for holding market share against stiff competition from main tablet rival Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN).

Apple Partners with Major Film Studios: The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple has forged content partnerships with five majors studiosLions Gate Entertainment Corp. (NYSE:LGF), Sony‘s (NYSE:SNE) Sony Pictures, Walt Disney (NYSE:DIS), Viacom‘s (NASDAQ:VIAB) Paramount Pictures and Time Warner‘s (NYSE:TWX) Warner Bros studios. Apple’s newfound Hollywood partnerships are geared toward fleshing out the capabilities of its iCloud; Apple hopes to license users to purchase content on their iPads, and later be able to stream it through their desktops as well. Apple senior executive Eddie Cue outlined at last week’s next-gen iPad debut that Apple is moving toward cross-platform integration via iCloud media synching. Announcement of new content syndication aligns with predictions that the iPad’s processing and graphics overhaul is geared toward Apple’s tablet evolving into a major media streaming device.

Apple Holding out Against Hostile Patent Claims: The latest entry in the protracted battle for the iPad trademark, Apple maintains that Proview Electronic’s assertion that it owns the iPad brand name in mainland China is egregious and misleading. The Washington Post reports that while a verdict from the case opened in Guangdong Province’s regional court is still pending, Apple refuses to cede ground to the Taiwanese LED manufacturer — and also shows no willingness to parlay with Proview over a private settlement.
