According to merger and acquisition statistics compiled by Mergermarket, an independent M&A intelligence service, 2011 was a good year for dealmaking. Some $2.18 trillion in merger and acquisition deals went down last year, an increase over 2010 numbers. It was the busiest year since 2008.

Here are the highlights:

Global M&A up 2.5% in 2011: Global M&A in 2011 totaled $2.18 trillion, up 2.5% from the same period in 2010 ($2.13 trillion) in the busiest year since 2008 ($ 2.40 trillion).
But momentum waned: On a down note, each successive quarter saw less activity than the last. The worst move down came recently, too, with $432 billion in deals were conducted in the fourth quarter, down 22.5% from Q3.
Goldman Sachs remains on top: Goldman Sachs (NYSE:GS) topped the global M&A financial advisory tables by total deal value for 2011, having advised on 309 deals worth US$ 593.4 billion.
U.S. M&A strong in 2011, emerging markets down: American companies saw the announcement of $820.6 billion in deals across 2011, the highest annual total deal value since 2007’s $ 1.33 trillion. The total was also up 14.4%  from 2010 ($717.2 billion). Emerging markets, however, took a spill.  Merger and acquisition activity in emerging markets decreased 11.7% from the same period in 2010.
Private equity buyouts strongest since 2008. It’s also worth noting that 2011 was the strongest year for buyout activity since 2008, with deals announced with a total value of $277.7 billion. That’s a 15.3% increase from the same period in 2010.
Energy, mining & utilities top sector in 2011 for M&A: Dealmaking across the “Energy, Mining & Utilities” sector saw the highest total value of M&A deals in 2011, according to Mergermarkets. The group of corporations accounted for 25.6% of global M&A deals announced, with totaling $557.7 billion.
